Transplanting tomato plants using newspaper pots

Newspaper is a great material to create garden crafts with because it can be composted. For this reason you can use it to make your own garden pots or seed starts. To start seeds ahead of time indoors and avoid the trouble of removing your fragile seedlings from the plastic containers, create your own.

Supplies Needed:

  • Newspaper
  • Scissors
  • Tomato Paste Sized Can

To Make:

  1. Cut 2 full pages into thirds making 3 long strips.
  2. Roll the newspaper up using the can, leaving it loose enough to remove the can. Keep some newspaper above one end of the can.
  3. Fold the excess newspaper left over the can down to form the bottom of your pot.
  4. Remove the can and insert a Coco Coir or Peat Pellets. These are growing mediums that will provide just enough to get your seeds started. After hydrating your growing medium plant your seeds and care for them until you are ready to transplant, newspaper and all, outdoors or to a bigger pot.
