45 to 70 Days to maturity. Lactuca sativa. Selway Leaf Lettuce Seeds. Annual, Heirloom, Open Pollinated. Selway is a tightly frilled and very deep red leaf Lolla Rosa type lettuce. The central rosette is tight with a beautiful lime green to yellow center. This lettuce holds well at maturity, is heat tolerant, and is very slow to bolt. It's adaptable to many growing conditions, but this is a cool weather plant, preferring 60°F to 65°F. It can be grown in spring and fall, and slow bolting by shading summer crops. Approximately 25,000 seeds / oz.

How to Grow Selway Leaf Lettuce

In cool areas, sow seeds in spring or early summer after the last frost in a sunny location. In more temperate zones, sow in both the spring and fall, or year-round in the tropics. Seeds should not be planted deep, but 1/4 inch or even a little less as they need light to germinate. Prepare good quality, fertile, and well-drained soil. Keep the soil moist. Moisture and stress, as well as high temperatures encourage bolting. For a longer harvest plant successively every few weeks.

Harvesting Selway Leaf Lettuce

Cut the lettuce off right at ground level. It's best to harvest in the morning, and store the lettuce in cool temperatures for two weeks or so.

Selway lettuce can also be harvested young, as soon as leaves are fully formed, for a sweeter baby-leaf flavor.

Culinary Tips

Use as any lettuce, in salads or recipes. The deep purple leaves make for an interesting salad variety, or as an ingredient in many recipes or as a substitute for greens.
