How to Grow Strawberries Guide

Strawberries can be grown from both seeds and bare roots. However, starting a new strawberry patch from bare roots is the most popular method. Growing strawberries from seeds can be quite difficult. Start by selecting the type of strawberries that best fit your intended harvesting schedule and desired characteristics as described above. Strawberries are best planted early in the spring once the soil has thawed. While harvesting strawberries is very exciting, keep in mind patience is key to a thriving strawberry patch. Few strawberry fruits should form in the first year as it is best to remove flowers and runners to direct energy into root establishment.

Before planting, identify a growing location with full sun and well-draining soil. Choose a cool, cloudy day for the best planting conditions. Dig a hole according to the size of your roots, typically 4-6 inches deep. Long roots can be trimmed to approximately 4 inches to prevent a “J” shape from establishing. Be sure to identify the location of the crown before burying the roots. The soil should come just up to the base, enough to completely bury the roots but not the crown. Burying the crown can lead to rotting and disease development. Generally, we recommend a spacing of 18-24 inches apart, but spacing choices may vary depending on the growing method (see below for more info).
