The main characteristic of Romaine lettuce (also called 'Cos' lettuce) is a rib that runs down the center of the lettuce leaf. Usually, Romaine lettuce grows in a cylindrical head, but not always. Romaines tend to be more heat tolerant than other lettuces. Romaine lettuce usually has a mild flavor and crisp leaves (but not always).
